MARIE ANTOINETTE - New Sophia Coppola Film (10/20/2006)

Sophia Coppola’s new film (an adaptation of Antonia Frasier’s biography of Marie Antoinette), starring Kirsten Dunst, Jason Schwartzman, Judy Davis, Rip Torn, Rose Byrne, Asia Argento, and Molly Shannon, will arrive in theaters October 20, 2006. Trailers for the film (which can be seen on the Sony Pictures website) feature songs by New Order and Gang of Four.

The punk and new wave aesthetic is apparent in the marketing of the film and the design of the website, which promotes the film with the tagline “The Party that Started a Revolution.” Having seen the film, we still can’t figure out how this musical genre figures into this age of decadence at Versailles other than to say, it is precisely what punk rock was not.
