The Best Books and Authors of the Next Generation

The Line Between by Peter S. Beagle

Reviewed by Niccole Paytosh

At some point in life I learned that there are precious few authors that can ever truly write: capturing real magic, defining it with human words, and then printing it on paper. Fewer still can do it twice in one lifetime. Peter S. Beagle is one of those authors, writing with a perfect blend of simplicity and power that always manages to find the magic in any situation.

The Line Between is a brand new collection of seven short stories, including “Two Hearts” the 2006 Hugo-award winning sequel to The Last Unicorn. Don’t worry about the stigma of sequels, I can guarantee you “Two Hearts” more then adequately captures the real magic and majesty of its predecessor. In fact, I would buy the entire collection if only to read this one, outstanding short story. The fact that the rest of the stories are equally as impressive is simply sweet, sweet icing on the cake. An added bonus for busy students, the short stories are perfectly sized for between class readings.

Exploring a variety of themes, settings, and characters in The Line Between, Beagle ensures everyone will find a story to identify with. Fantasy fans too mature for unicorns will surely enjoy the beautiful imagery of “Salt Wine”, a wonderfully written sea tale. While fans of modern magic, similar to the Harry Potter books will crave more of the wonderful dynamics present in “El Regalo”. Even non-fantasy fans will find “ Mr. Sigerson” set during the hidden years of Sherlock Holmes and narrated by the “crotchety, sardonic concertmaster, who admires Sherlock Holmes solely for his musical gifts…” a fast-paced, informed, and enjoyable read.  With a little magic for everyone The Line Between is the perfect addition to any campus library or student book bag.
