Adventures in Bookland

Here at 21st Century Lit, we have a problem: entirely too many books.

Oh, it was fun for a while. We crafted forts out of Harry Potter books (very sturdy!), complete with chairs fashioned from copies of The Devil Wears Prada (they were highly fashionable chairs). And there we would sit, naming our favorite authors of the past 10 years and puffing on imaginary cigars.

But soon we started feeling guilty. These books aren’t for us; they’re for you! So we dismantled our most prized possession: a book ottoman constructed out of 30 copies of Tom McCarthy’s Remainder. We’d like for you guys to have them.

You see, our goal at 21st Century Lit is to introduce you to the best books and authors of the next generation. But more importantly, we want you to remember what it’s like to read for pleasure. Not for class, not to kill time in an airport, but to actively enjoy and engage with a book. So here’s what we want to do: If you can commit to reading and forming an opinion on it, we will send you a book for free.

To be more specific, we’re starting an informal online reading group. If you’re interested, send us an e-mail, and we’ll outfit you with a username and password so you can login and post directly to the site. While you’re reading, post your thoughts on the book—fleeting impressions are fine! We’re not looking for an involved post-colonial analysis here (although you are welcome to make one, and we will be duly impressed). Other people will be able to comment upon your post, hopefully stimulating some dialogue with readers from all over the country! Best of all, the fruits of your labor will be on the 21st Century Lit website for all of our visitors to marvel over.
